FATIMA JINNAH MEDICAL COLLEGE LAHORE

In 1946 the family of Sir Ganga Ram started a medical college by the name Balak Ram medical College named after a son of Sir Ganga Ram. Soon after claiming independence in 1947 which engulfed this part of the sub-continent as well, the college which was in its infancy stood virtually closed ad its premises were abandoned. However, the renowned medical professional Prof. Shujaat Ali with the help and assistance of his other professional colleagues nurtured the idea of setting up a medical institution for producing female doctors and train them for helping in the health care of the women folk of this newly established country. It was especially felt that, by virtue of cultural and social set up of a Muslim society it was a much needed requirement of the time.

With this laudable objective in view the team of Prof. Shujaat Ali moved for obtaining the approval of Quaid-i-Azam for giving the institution name after the name of his sister Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah. The Quaid bery graciously approved the name of this institution to be associated with his sister Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah andFATIMA JINNAH MEDICAL COLLEGE FOR WOMEN LAHORE admitted its first batch of 39 students in Oct. 1948 and was then formally inaugurated on 31.03.1949 by Khawaja Nazim-ud-Din, the then Prime Minister of Pakistan. It was indeed a great occasion for the nation as the first women medical institution came into being in the country.

Fatima Jinnah Medical College admits now 250 students every year. 50% seats are reserved for Federal Govt. and in these seats students from Sindh, NWFP, Balochistan, FATA, PATA, AJK & Northern Areas are admitted,23 seats are reserved as PTAP (Pakistan Technical Assistance Programme) for the friendly and Islamic countries and at the moment we have 157 foreign students from 27 countries. NAWAZ SHARIF MEDICAL COLLEGE GUJRAT

The University of Gujrat, the Rachna College of Engineering and Technology, Gujranwala, and the Gujranwala Campus of University of the Punjab are fulfilling the needs of local population in terms of Social Sciences, Basic Sciences, Computer Sciences, Commerce and Engineering education. However, medical education, though in high demand, is not available in these institutions. Realising the inadequate facilities of medical education and quality health services, the Government of the Punjab took a historic step to revolutionise the health care facilities in Gujrat by establishing the Nawaz Sharif Medical College (NSMC) at the University of Gujrat in September 2008.

The following objectives have been set for the NSMC:

  • It will establish a system of medical counselling in wards as well as out patients departments where doctors assisted by clinical psychologists and social workers will address the relatives of the patients about nature of the disease and its prognosis.

  • There will be regular interaction with the public at least twice a week on hygienic living conditions.

  • The doctors and paramedical staff will be trained by and under the direct supervision of highly qualified faculty members through utilising state-of the-art medical equipments and most recently adopted teaching methodologies.

  • To develop a system of interaction with colleges, schools and mosques to bring public awareness about prevention of diseases.

  • To establish research-oriented atmosphere among the doctors not only in modern medical field but also in indigenous medicine.

  • A mandatory system of medical, surgical and administrative audit will be established for ensuring accountability and responsibility on the part of employees, especially medical teachers.

  • By induction of highly qualified medical professionals and modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipments, not only the public of District Gujrat, but also adjoining areas of Gujranwala, Sialkot, Wazirabad, Jhelum, Kharian and Mandi Bahauddin will be facilitated.

  • The introduction of CT scan, MRI facilities, Cardiac Angiography, Cardiac Surgery, etc will provide state-of the-art health care facilities to the public of the area.

  • The College will develop a Health Management Information System and computer networking in the institution. In future, the College will become an institution for post-graduate studies.

  • In near future, College of Dentistry, College of Nursing, School of Physiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine Centre will be set up in Gujrat.

  • The trend to attend the teaching hospital attached to the College will increase after the provision of new medical facilities. Therefore, there is also a need to expand the existing infrastructure of the hospital and equip it with modern medical equipments to facilitate the learners as well as patients of the local area.

  • Finally, the University of Gujrat plans to establish a Research and Development Centre to address the emerging issues through various socio-medical studies by engaging the medical and social sciences faculty/students both from the NSMC and UOG.
